Final Grade Calculator
"What do I need on the final?" — get the exact answer in seconds. Supports simple mode (3 fields) and detailed weighted-assignment mode.
Find your required final exam score
Enter your grades and target — the required score updates as you type.
needed = (target − current × (1 − final worth)) ÷ final worth. The math is exact — the answer is only as accurate as the numbers you enter, so double-check your syllabus for your final's weight. How to calculate your final exam score manually
The formula is simple once you break it down:
- Find your current grade (excluding the final) as a percentage.
- Check your final's worth — for example 40% of your total grade.
- Set your target — the overall grade you want in the class.
- Apply:
needed = (target − current × (1 − worth)) ÷ worth
Example: current grade 82%, final worth 40%, target 90% →(90 − 82 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = (90 − 49.2) ÷ 0.4 = 102%. Since 102% is impossible, your 90% target is out of reach unless there's a curve — but the calculator will also show you the maximum grade you can still achieve.
Frequently asked questions
What grade do I need on my final exam?+
Use the formula: final exam score needed = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final worth)) ÷ final worth. For example, with an 85% current grade, a final worth 40% of your grade, and a 90% target: (90 − 85 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 97.5%. That's the score you need on the final.
How does the final grade calculator work?+
The calculator works backward from your target. It takes your current grade, the percentage your final exam is worth, and the grade you want, then solves for the score you need on the final. In weighted mode it lets you enter each assignment's score and weight for a more precise estimate.
What if my final exam is worth 30% of my grade?+
Enter 30 as the final worth. The formula automatically adjusts: with a 30% final, your current grade carries 70% of the weight, so a low final has less impact — but you'll need a higher score to move a weak current grade.
Can I calculate with weighted assignments?+
Yes — switch to Weighted mode and add each assignment (score and weight). The calculator sums the weighted points you've earned and solves for the final exam score needed to reach your target.
What if I need more than 100% on my final?+
If the required score is above 100, the target is mathematically out of reach this semester — even a perfect final won't get you there. The calculator will tell you the maximum grade you can still achieve instead.
What if I already have the grade I want?+
If the required final score is zero or negative, you've already secured your target grade — congratulations! The calculator will show a positive message so you know you can relax.
Does this work for points-based classes?+
The simple mode works whenever your final is worth a percentage of your grade. For points-based classes (e.g. 500 total points, 100 for the final), enter current points as a percentage of the non-final total, and the final's share as its percentage of the total.
How accurate is this calculator?+
The math is exact — the result only depends on the numbers you enter. Make sure your current grade and final worth match your syllabus. If your teacher rounds grades or curves the final, the real threshold may be slightly different.
